All you need to know about Author Uta Christensen
Strategic Book Group
Authors of Strategic are taking over the world one blog at a time
Uta Christensen
Author of Caught Midstream and Bed of Roses, Bed of Thorns
She comes from the Rhineland, the north-western part of Germany. Her birthplace was not near the banks of the famous Rhine River, but inland to the east of Cologne, in the heavily forested hill country, where villages hundreds of years old are nestled in secluded valleys. Her father’s family originated in Holland. An early ancestor, a Dutch pastor, came to this hill country and settled in one of the secluded valleys 200 years ago. As Uta grew up, she developed four passions—roaming the magic forests, reading literature, collecting stories of interesting people, and dreaming of traveling the world. Her passion for traveling was satisfied much later, for at first it was an adventure she was fascinated with while exploring the old family Atlas and letting her eyes and fingers roam across countries and continents. What to do with her collected stories came to her even later than her travels.
Russian literature excited her the most during her early teenage years. She immersed herself in Dostoyevski, Tolstoy and Turgenev. In her search for Russian books, she found lesser known novels set in Siberia, the most forbidding part of Russia, where life was hard all year long but especially harsh during the long, dark, icy winters when food became scarce. This harshness of life fascinated her. Later she branched out into English, French, German and American literature. There was a period when she became obsessed with plays and amassed a sizable collection of them, starting with the Greek playwrights—Euripides, Aristophanes and Sophocles—and later with the German, English, French and American playwrights, all in German translations.
In her later teens, Uta became seriously interested in the English language. She traveled to Ireland and lived there for some time to develop her English skills. Joseph Conrad, the acclaimed Polish writer, inspired her to master this language as he had done to such perfection that he wrote his novels and stories in English. Returning home from Ireland and being now twenty years old, she journeyed to New Zealand, a country situated farther from Germany than any other on the globe. She always thought of this journey as one of a lifetime—six weeks traveling on a passenger ship from Amsterdam to England, then south along the Atlantic coasts of the Netherlands, France and Portugal, through the Mediterranean, through the Suez Canal with an overland excursion to Cairo and the Pyramids, on through the Red Sea to Aden on the tip of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula, across the Indian Ocean to Australia and across the Tasman Sea to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
In New Zealand she met her future husband, an American engineer and artist working on a research project for the University of Denver. They both happened to settle for awhile in the small town of Blenheim in the north of New Zealand’s South Island. They were the only single foreigners in town. They met and got married in Blenheim’s quaint Anglican Church with most of the town showing up for their marriage ceremony. Their story became the front page feature in print and pictures in the town’s daily paper.
A year later, when her husband’s contract expired, they moved to Colorado and a short time later to California, her husband’s home state. There Uta enrolled in a California State University, chose a double major in English and German literature and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction. Their family was founded when the couple had two children in short succession, a son and a daughter. A few years later, Uta assumed full-time work at the University of California at Santa Cruz as an Administrative Analyst. She wrote mainly poetry during her early married life; but eventually started her first serious prose writing project in the late 1980’s, her father’s memoir of his five years spent as a German prisoner of war in Russia after WWII. This first book was written in German at her father’s request, for he never mastered English. Caught Midstream was Uta Christensen’s first American published novel in 2006. It is the moving story of an innocent German teenager caught at the very the end of WWII by the Russian army invading Germany and sent as a prisoner of war to Russia where he spent several years in hard labor camps. Three years later, in 2009, the novel Bed of Roses, Bed of Thorns was published in the USA. It is an intricate family saga of three generations of a family, set in the first half of the 20th Century, with an embedded coming-of-age story of the novel’s young protagonist. Uta Christensen is currently writing her third novel with the title Tough As Fine Silk. It is a moving and passionate love story involving a young American and a young Chinese woman. The setting is China at the beginning of the 21st Century. It is a story of a potentially life-threatening accident; a mysterious car crash; an escape of the lovers; a journey through China’s ancient dynastic history; and a surprising ending of the lovers’ flight from pursuit.
All of Uta Christensen’s novels are based on her collected true stories. She thinks of these stories as seeds planted in her imagination, tended, watered and fertilized over the years. Through her unique way of caring for and shaping these stories, they have grown and matured into moving narratives. Her books are featured on her website www.utachristensen.com and on www.amazon.com.
Uta Christensen’s main residence is in Santa Cruz, California, but she spends four or five months out of every year in Australia, where she does most of her writing in a peaceful seaside setting.

Great Updates from author David Lowe! Keep up the good work!
Hi Kait,
Just a brief update on promoting A Dirty Game:
Press release – LJMU’s press office has contacted local and national media and are waiting on replies from national media (The Times Educational Supplement and The Guardian newspapers). We should hear something soon and once I have and a release is done, I will forward it onto you;
Twitter – worked out strategy. Rather than waste time following peop0le who may not follow me, I worked out how would be most likely to come back and follow me, who I could then promote the book too. Supporting my local soccer team, Everton I have contacted as many Everton supporters as possible on twitter and in a week went from 60 to 276 followers. As each one said they were following me I sent them a direct message promoting the book and this seems to have results as the sales on Amazon (mainly the UK site) have been consistent. After I have drained the Everton resource, being a member of the Labour Party (political party in UK) they will be next!
Facebook author’s site – in sending out a high number of friend requests I got a 30 day block due to my enthusiasm, now that has been lifted I developed a strategy of inviting 10 per day (70 per week) and asked current members of the author site to invite their friends to join, approaching 800 now and increasing;
YouTube: Later this week will have a promo video posted on YouTube. Had help from my students putting it together and they have top tips of how to get a high number of people viewing it. It looks really good and once I have the link I will send it to you, but once this is up there will be links to twitter and author facebook page as well as my website, that someone else has stepped in to help out in getting it finished.
Poster campaign: again with help of my students to coincide with the YouTube release, posters are going up locally to promote the work.
Other areas we will work on is once the YouTube promo is done I will be contacting local radio etc as well as national media that run campaigns for those fighting terrorism. (Trust me, when you see it, have you Kleenex ready – it is very emotive and powerful).
Speak to you soon and hopefully Wed/Thurs should have the YouTube promo ready and I’ll send you then link.
Regards,
David Lowe, Author of " A Dirty Game:A David Hurst Story"

Author Mike Saxton Does it Again.....
When a tyrannical dictator who calls himself Lord Zodiac makes the world bow down to its knees to him, who can stand against him and his forces’ immense power? How about Vincent Black, a man who represents one of the signs of the zodiac, the scorpion, and who was kidnapped against his will by a government agency and was transformed, becoming super-strong and super- fast? That’s the basic scenario of the edge-of-your-seat, page-turning SF novel, 7 Scorpions: Rebellion, the first in a planned trilogy, by author Mike Saxton. It’s difficult to imagine anyone standing against the Darth-Vader-like Lord Zodiac, at least not for very long. The Flash Bombs he detonated simultaneously in every major city around the globe was an impressive display of his powers, and the fight was over almost before it started. Then, the Seekers took over, Lord Zodiac’s own immense private army of lobotomized humans controlled by a mechanical spider-looking device implanted in their skulls. They feel no pain nor fear, and carry out whatever orders Zodiac and his generals give them. Also, they send out waves of fear towards anyone who dares to resist them, which is a very intimidating deterrent to rebels attempting to form an alliance. Still, pockets of rebels do organize in Connecticut (the setting of the novel). Unfortunately for them, the SATs are controlled by Lord Zodiac, and the satellites are able to pinpoint the rebel bases and eliminate them, one by one. Vincent Black, also known as the Night Viper, is reluctant to talk about his past, and what the government did to him, other than to say: “I’m what happens when the government plays around with things they shouldn’t.” Black had once had cancer, but the governments’ experiments on him got rid of it, besides making him into a super soldier. His eyelid is tattooed with the number 7, The first 6 people the government experimented on didn’t survive, but somehow, Vincent Black did. The project was called Project Scorpion, so after Black escaped, he had a scorpion tattooed around the same eye as a “kind of memorial to the six people I never met who died perfecting a procedure which would save my life.” The fear-inducing waves that Lord Zodiac, his generals, commanders, and Seekers send forth have no effect on Vincent Black. They also have no effect on Alexis Hera, who teams up with him, along with other rebels trying to escape the Seekers and Apocalypse Dozers trying to destroy them. Alexis is a woman who, like Black, had cancer, and had to have an operation on her brain stem to remove a tumor “near the amygdala, a walnut-sized portion of the brain that controls fear.” She is an expert marksman, and has considerable hand-to-hand fighting skills. Other than Vincent, Alexis is the only other person who has ever managed to kill a Seeker commander. The Apocalypse Dozers are one of the cooler weapons of mass destruction at Lord Zodiac’s disposal. They have whirring, spinning blades that destroy everything in their paths, including trees, buildings, vehicles, and people. Lord Zodiac has those under him, like the evil and sadistic Commander Jade, direct the Apocalypse Dozers towards rebel headquarters, which makes short work of them. Then, any survivors are either made into slaves or new Seekers, zombie-like soldiers used to find and annihilate any other rebels foolish enough to go against them. The experiments the government performed on Black left him strong enough to lift a car over his head and throw it, or to leap incredible distances even if he is carrying someone. Many aspects of the novel 7 Scorpions: Rebellion seemed almost to be the stuff of super hero comic books or computer games. I’m a fan of both, so that played into my enjoyment of the novel. Though Black, Alexis, and rebels like the computer techie Josh have some success against Lord Zodiac, I am anxious to read the next novel in the series, 7 Scorpions: Revolution, when it comes out. 7 Scorpions: Rebellion is an exhilarating, high-octane adrenaline rush of a novel that anyone who loves military science fiction owes it to themselves to check out. The unfolding origin tale of Vincent Black was interesting and plausible, though it was reminiscent to movies like Universal Soldier. It was still pretty cool, and Alexis Hera is a good foil for him. For being a human who was not directly involved in Project Scorpion, she is one bad-ass and then some. This is a great start by Mike Saxton, and I hope that the other two novels in his trilogy are as fantastic or more so than this one! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SBG E-book Places in Top 10 on The Reader’s Choice Review Blog
January 18, 2011 - For the second year in a row, author Jeffrey B. Allen’s inspirational book GoneAway – Into the Land has placed on the Top Ten of the year list for e-books on The Reader's Choice Review Blog.
See for yourself at http://www.readerschoicereviews.com/2011/01/readers-choice-book-reviews-top-10-of.html.
Allen’s online review notes: “He brings all the players together in a David versus Goliath-type showdown for the ages that will have you rooting for John to the end. I believe it will become the next time-tested classic fantasy tale, universally adored and mentioned in the same breath as The Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Lord of The Rings. I highly recommend this thought-provoking, entertaining read.”
The author takes readers on a fantastic journey into a place called the Land, where reality blends into fantasy. The story is about 12-year-old John Greber who, with his mother, Ellie, suffers abuse at the hands of John’s father, whom he calls “The Beast.” One day his father abandons the family, but he takes John’s six-year old sister, Marny, away with him.
On a mission to rescue his sister and confront his father, John and his mother find themselves entangled in a Civil War that could destroy the Land as well as the World. GoneAway – Into the Land travels a totally different direction than expected. With its poignant theme of family abuse, the story proves that the strength of the human spirit can overcome all odds.
“There is a faint dream-like quality to this book,” says author A.F. Stewart in a recent review. “GoneAway – Into the Land is a captivating book with a creative narrative that quietly lures a reader into an original world that is fully realized and thoroughly absorbing. It transcends into a superb piece of fiction, and I recommend it highly.”
GONEAWAY – INTO THE LAND: BOOK 1 is also available in hard cover (ISBN: 978-1-60860-859-1, $38.05) and soft cover (ISBN: 978-1-60976-132-5, $21.50) and can be ordered through the publisher’s website:

About the Author: Jeffrey B. Allen lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he consults in the field of architectural design, though most of his time is devoted to writing. He hopes readers will each come away with something different. “Gone Away is far from a religious novel. It is an inspirational novel, a philosophical novel.”
